Welcome to our Grade One classroom!
As you read this, your son/daughter has already had their first day in grade one and likely has much to share with you. There is a great deal of excitement among the students to begin this year together and I find that I am sharing in that enthusiasm too. It is my hope and prayer that you will join us in this year of education – one of tremendous learning leaps – and joyfully be involved where possible.
Communication
In an effort to keep clear the communication between home and school, the agenda wherein you have found and are reading this letter is designed to be used for daily communication between you and your child’s teacher. I ask that you read the agenda each night and sign or initial beside the date. I will do the same each day. Please use the agenda to convey messages to school, rather than sending small slips of paper that are easily lost.
I understand that this takes commitment, and I thank you in advance. Further, do not hesitate to contact me when you have concerns, comments, or criticisms.
How Can You Help?
There are a variety of opportunities for volunteerism in the classrooms of DCS. Grade one is no exception. In-class help, field-trip supervision, and special events all require extra hands. Sometimes, there are preparatory jobs that can be done a home as well. Please write a note in your child’s agenda if you would like to assist in any way.
More importantly, you can help by the interest you show in your child’s school life on a daily basis. Please take the time each day to check the agenda and to talk with your child about the completed work they bring home. Further, participate with your child in his/her education by assisting with projects or small assignments that come home. Grade one has some exciting learning tools that are enhanced when mom and dad are involved – Show & Tell, the B.E.A.R. book, Kid of the Week, and the T.W.A.S. Journal are some examples.
All in all it will be a busy year. I thank you for the opportunity to assist in the education of your children and I covet your prayers for the teaching and learning that takes place from day to day both in the grade one classroom and the school at large.
In His service,
Mr. Tim VanderHooft
